Ceremony
This service supports individuals and families in thoughtfully exploring options for body disposition, including embalming, cremation, aquamation, and green burial. Guided by the words of poet and undertaker Thomas Lynch, “The living do not matter to the dead, but the dead matter to the living,” our focus is on honoring both your wishes and the needs of your loved ones.
· Planning Together: This process is about creating a meaningful ceremony. We can plan a celebration of life, a memorial at a funeral parlor, a religious service at a church, or a nature walk with a green burial. Each option has unique elements that we will document as your wishes and guidance. Additionally, there are many new options for body disposition and handling cremains. These include pressing ashes into jewelry or stones, scattering them in special locations like the base of a California redwood, using biodegradable water urns, or modern scattering urns. Many people are unaware of these possibilities, often believing their choices are extremely limited.
· Avoiding Confusion: Clear communication is essential. Family members often think, “My daughter knows what I want,” while others may have different understandings. Documenting your desires helps prevent confusion and potential resentment, during what can be an emotionally charged time.
· Significance of Special Items: We’ll consider special items that carry personal meaning, recognizing their importance in honoring your legacy. Treasured items provide comfort and may become keepsakes handed down through generations.
· Legacy Projects: This work can also include legacy projects, such as a collection of written or recorded stories, family photos, or cherished recipes. These items can be created with intention and purpose specifically for you and your family.
· Leaving a Lasting Impact: The greatest gift you can leave your family is the example of a ‘good death,’ granting them peace and grace in their grief. Together, we can ensure your end-of-life celebration reflects the love and memories you wish to convey.
Navigating these conversations about end-of-life planning can be challenging, but I am here to support you in ensuring that your wishes are honored. Our discussions are confidential, and you have control over who you choose to share this information with. Additionally, you can include a video recording that captures your voice and intentions, further ensuring that your wishes are heard and respected. Together, we can create a thoughtful plan that honors both you and your loved ones.
